Nigeria, with an estimated population exceeding 230 million, is the most populous country in Africa. The distribution of this population varies significantly across its 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Determining the exact population of each state can be challenging due to varying data sources and the time elapsed since the last official census. However, based on available estimates, the following states are recognized as the most populous:
- Lagos State: Located in the southwestern region, Lagos is Nigeria’s smallest state by land area but the most densely populated. Estimates suggest a population ranging from approximately 9 million to over 17 million, depending on the source. The city of Lagos, the state’s capital, is a major financial and cultural hub.
- Kano State: Situated in the northwestern part of Nigeria, Kano is one of the country’s largest states by land area. It has a significant population, with estimates around 16 million people. The city of Kano serves as a major commercial and industrial center in the region.
- Katsina State: Also located in the northwest, Katsina has an estimated population of approximately 9.3 million people. The state shares a border with the Republic of Niger and has a predominantly agrarian economy.
- Kaduna State: Found in the north-central region, Kaduna has an estimated population of about 8.4 million. The state is known for its diverse ethnic composition and serves as a significant political and cultural center.
- Bauchi State: Located in the northeastern part of Nigeria, Bauchi has an estimated population of around 7.6 million people. The state is known for its rich cultural heritage and natural attractions, including the Yankari National Park.
It’s important to note that these figures are estimates and may vary between sources. The most recent comprehensive national census in Nigeria was conducted in 2006, and subsequent population figures have been based on projections. The Nigerian government has announced plans to conduct a new census to obtain updated and accurate demographic data.
Understanding the population distribution across Nigeria’s states is crucial for effective policy planning, resource allocation, and addressing regional developmental needs.
