The Afro-Caribbean region, which includes Africa and the Caribbean, is mostly tropical and warm. However, some places in Africa experience significant snowfall due to high altitudes, while the Caribbean rarely sees snow.

1. African Nations with Snow-Covered Areas

Although most of Africa is warm, some countries have mountain ranges that receive snow:

a. Morocco

  • Atlas Mountains – The High Atlas range, including Mount Toubkal (4,167m), is covered with snow during winter.
  • Ifrane – A city in Morocco known as “Africa’s Switzerland” due to its snowy winters.

b. Algeria

  • Tell Atlas Mountains – Receive snowfall in winter.
  • Chrea National Park – A ski destination in North Africa.

c. Tunisia

  • Djebel Chambi (1,544m) – The highest mountain in Tunisia, occasionally covered in snow.

d. South Africa & Lesotho

  • Drakensberg Mountains – Snow falls in winter, especially in Lesotho.
  • Tiffindell Ski Resort (South Africa) – The only ski resort in the country.

e. Ethiopia

  • Simien Mountains – High-altitude areas experience snow occasionally.

f. Kenya & Tanzania

  • Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) – Africa’s highest mountain has a permanent ice cap, though shrinking due to climate change.
  • Mount Kenya (5,199m) – Has glaciers and receives snowfall.

2. Caribbean Nations with Rare Snowfall

The Caribbean is mostly tropical, but a few places have recorded snow:

a. Cuba

  • Recorded Snowfall: In March 1857, a rare snow event occurred in Havana.

b. Dominican Republic

  • Pico Duarte (3,098m) – The highest peak in the Caribbean, occasionally gets frost or light snow.

c. Puerto Rico

  • Cerro Punta (1,338m) – The highest peak, where temperatures can drop but snow is extremely rare.

Conclusion

  • In Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Lesotho, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania have snow-covered areas.
  • In the Caribbean, snow is almost unheard of, but high-altitude places like Pico Duarte (Dominican Republic) can get frost.
