William H. Richardson, An African American Inventor, Revolutionized Baby Transport

William H. Richardson, an African American inventor, revolutionized baby transport with his innovative design of the baby carriage. On June 18, 1889, he was granted U.S. Patent Number 405,600 for his improvements.

Richardson’s design introduced a pivotal feature: a bassinet that could rotate to face either towards or away from the caregiver, enhancing interaction and convenience. Additionally, he implemented independently turning wheels, allowing for 360-degree maneuverability in tight spaces.

While the first baby carriage was created in 1733 by English architect William Kent for the children of the 3rd Duke of Devonshire,

Richardson’s enhancements made baby carriages more practical and accessible, leading to widespread adoption across various social classes by the early 1900s.
